Thinning of the corpus callosum refers to an abnormally reduced thickness in this key brain structure that connects the two hemispheres. It can arise from developmental issues or acquired damage and often links to neurological symptoms.
## Causes
Thinning may be primary, due to failed myelination in conditions like hypomyelinating leukoencephalopathies, metabolic disorders, or microcephaly. Secondary causes include diffuse injuries such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, HIV encephalopathy, hydrocephalus, or focal issues like trauma, infarction, or white matter injury in prematurity.
## Associated Conditions
It's frequently tied to developmental delays in children, including motor and language milestones, with thinner regions like the anterior midbody or splenium showing strong correlations. Other links include agenesis or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, seizures, and cognitive challenges.
## Diagnosis and Implications
MRI typically reveals the thinning, which can be generalized or focal, prompting evaluation for underlying disorders. Children with thin corpus callosum warrant developmental screening, and vice versa.
