ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects a child’s ability to pay attention, control impulses, and manage activity levels. It usually starts in childhood and can continue into adulthood.
It’s more than just being “naughty” or “hyperactive” — it’s linked to differences in brain development and functioning.
Causes of ADHD
The exact cause isn’t fully known, but likely a mix of:
- Genetics – Often runs in families.
- Brain differences – Variations in brain areas controlling attention and self-control.
- Pregnancy/birth factors – Premature birth, low birth weight, maternal smoking, alcohol use, or exposure to toxins.
- Environment – Lead exposure, stressful family environment may contribute (but not the main cause).
⚠️ ADHD is not caused by too much sugar, watching TV, or poor parenting.
Symptoms of ADHD in Kids
Symptoms usually appear before age 12 and fall into 3 main categories:
1. Inattention (trouble focusing)
- Easily distracted, doesn’t seem to listen.
- Difficulty following instructions or finishing tasks.
- Forgetful, loses things often.
- Avoids tasks needing focus (like homework).
2. Hyperactivity (excessive movement)
- Fidgeting, tapping, or squirming in seat.
- Runs/climbs at inappropriate times.
- Talks too much, restless.
- Trouble playing quietly.
3. Impulsivity (acting without thinking)
- Interrupts others, blurts out answers.
- Can’t wait for their turn.
- Takes risks without thinking of consequences.
When to consult a Doctor?
Consider consulting a pediatrician if your child:
- Shows persistent symptoms (for more than 6 months).
- Symptoms appear in more than one setting (home, school, playground).
- Struggles with learning, school performance, or making friends.
- Behavior causes stress for family or teachers.
You or teachers notice extreme hyperactivity, distractibility, or impulsiveness compared to other kids of the same age.
✅ Early diagnosis and treatment (behavioral therapy, parent training, school support, sometimes medication) can help kids manage ADHD successfully.
