Description

Developing Movement, Strength, Balance and Mobility

Paediatric physiotherapy supports children who have difficulties with movement, posture, strength, balance, coordination or mobility. These difficulties may be associated with developmental delays, neurological conditions, musculoskeletal problems or other health needs. Therapy helps children practise movement skills that are important for play, daily activities, school participation and greater independence.

Who May Benefit?

It may be appropriate for children who have delays in sitting, crawling, standing or walking; difficulties with balance or coordination; reduced strength or endurance; postural challenges; or movement limitations related to a health condition.

Areas That May Be Addressed

● Gross-motor development and functional movement

● Head, trunk and postural control, where relevant

● Strength, endurance, balance and coordination

● Transitions such as moving between sitting, standing and the floor

● Crawling, standing, walking and stair practice, according to ability

● Gait training and mobility practice when indicated

● Participation in physical play and age-appropriate activities

● Caregiver education, safe handling and home exercise activities

Our Approach

The physiotherapist assesses the child’s movement, functional abilities and family priorities. Goals are selected to fit the child’s current abilities and everyday needs. Treatment may include therapeutic play, task-specific practice, strengthening, balance activities and mobility training. Families may receive guidance on safe ways to encourage practice at home. Progress is reviewed regularly and the programme is adjusted as the child’s skills and needs change.
