Ataxic CP (Ataxic Cerebral Palsy)
Ataxic CP is a type of cerebral palsy caused by damage to the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination).
Key features:
• Poor balance and coordination
• Unsteady, wide-based walking
• Difficulty with fine motor skills (writing, buttoning)
• Tremors, especially during purposeful movements
• Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
• Speech may sound slow or slurred
Important points:
• It is the least common type of cerebral palsy
• Intelligence is often normal, but motor planning is affected
• Symptoms become more noticeable as the child grows and attempts complex movements
Therapy management:
• Occupational Therapy – fine motor control, daily living skills
• Physiotherapy – balance, gait training, core stability
• Speech Therapy – if speech coordination is affected
