The Babinski reflex is a normal neurological response in newborns, triggered by stroking the sole of the foot. It indicates healthy early brain and nerve development.
## Testing Method
Healthcare providers test it by firmly stroking the bottom of the baby's foot from heel to toes using a finger or blunt object. The big toe extends upward (dorsiflexion), while the other toes fan out.
This positive response is expected and protects infants while their corticospinal tracts mature.
## Normal Timeline
It appears at birth and typically disappears between 9-24 months as the nervous system myelinate. Persistence beyond 2 years may signal issues like brain or spinal cord problems in older children.
## Variations
Premature babies may show a weaker response due to ongoing development. In adults, a positive Babinski indicates potential neurological damage, unlike the normal downward toe curl.
